Many people enjoy reading while on vacation. Most will take a romantic novel, a political thriller, or a murder mystery. Not Matt Ridley. On his recent vacation he was reading a book called "Nothing to Envy" about six North Koreans who defected to South Korea (via China). As Ridley notes, the tale that they tell is as instructive about the environment and human well-being as it may be about the nature of totalitarianism. As for the doomsday environmentalists who think that everything is going to hell in a handbasket, and that capitalism or consumerism is to blame, they are the ones who most need to read this.
