Then one day he was shootin' at some food...

With so many politicians, pundits, and celebrities spouting off (no pun intended) about how we're "addicted to oil" and how much better off life would be without oil, it's time to take a step back and see where we would be if oil had never been discovered and exploited. My best guess is about the year 1900. So much of what we see around us has been made cheaper and safer and better because of petroleum products.

Jeff Jacoby of the Boston Globe wrote recently about how much our lives are improved by this one miraculous resource. Basically, without oil, modern civilization would not exist.

We're not "addicted to oil", unless you also think that we are addicted to air or water. They are all necessary to make our modern lives possible.

What do you think the age cut-off is for people who get your title? I'm guessing 32. I sure loved it. Thanks for being clever.

Well I'm 31, and I got the title. But my mom used to watch a lot of TV Land reruns.

People tend to forget that oil/petroleum is a necessary ingredient in plastics. Even without considering the fuel for vehicles, etc., we are certainly dependent on oil for all things plastic. And that's a good thing.

Good points... now add to that:

Oil was an incredible nuisance for a very long time. It caused problems. When a use for the stuff was discovered people were overjoyed!

Not to mention oil is in everything! I don't think the people calling the shots truly comprehend how much oil THEY are using...but then again...
