Ideas Having Sex

I previously mentioned that I'm following a blog written by Matt Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist. Today I'm linking to an article by Mr. Ridley in Reason Magazine entitled "Ideas Having Sex". While the phrase is really just clever marketing, the rationale behind it is solid.

Much of Matt Ridley's book is dedicated to showing how promiscuous ideas have been the real driving engine that has advanced technology so much over the centuries.

One person can have a truly great idea, but if that idea isn't shared, built upon, and modified by other great ideas, it will die an early death, and will benefit no one except that person.

This article may be a bit long, but it is a very interesting read, illuminating how the sharing of ideas, or lack of sharing, has affected humankind for millennia.

There you go exceeding my two screen limit again, but 2 points for an eye-catching title. :)

Those interested in Ridley's very good book might also wish to know about my own book, THE CASE FOR RATIONAL OPTIMISM (Transaction Books, Rutgers University, 2009), which makes quite similar points and arguments, but develops the case for optimism over a rather broader range of subject areas.
